Matthew Bates is currently the Design Director of Backpacker magazine, overseeing the design of various outdoor brands ranging from consumer and trade magazines to iPad apps and other outdoor related digital products. While at Backpacker, the magazine has won numerous design awards including multiple medals from the Society of Publication Designers and Backpacker’s first National Magazine Awards for General Excellence in both print and digital. He has also been recognized by American Illustration, Communication Arts and the Western Publishing Association’s Maggies.
